4-part Beginner's Sewing Class

DATE CHANGE!!

We have been asked over and over again for a beginners sewing course for adults (just like our kid’s camp) and it’s finally here! We will be offering this course more than once at different times/days to try and accommodate but for now, our first class will be meeting on Thursday evenings starting on October 26th from 5pm-7pm.

You will be learning quilting basics in this course:

  • Parts on your machine

  • Terms and Definitions

  • Rotary Cutting (how we cut quilting fabric)

  • Pressing

  • Quilting skills and techniques

  • Choosing fabrics and supplies

We will focus on creating quilts in this course. You will come and pick out the fabrics for your project using a “charm pack” (a fancy name for 5” squares). You will learn how to sew fabric together to make a “top” and learn the art of machine appliqué as well. You will then quilt your project and finish by binding it. There will be short lessons on pressing and cutting during the course. You will leave with a new understanding of your machine and a finished project. We offer several beginner classes at MDQ Designs year round to keep you learning and sewing after this course is through.

If you already have a machine, make sure it is in good working order prior to class and bring the manual with you. We offer a full line of PFAFF sewing machines in shop and would love to help you choose the right machine to fit your needs if you don’t yet have one. We will put the full class price towards a new machine should you choose to purchase one from us. ($150 off!)

Cost: $150 - this includes materials for the project you will be making and our class instructor fee. Paid in full at the first class.

Date & Time: Thursday Evenings from 5pm-7pm starting November 2nd. (2nd, 9th, 16th & 30th) - Kari is flexible and if a date needs changed and it works for the whole class we will do our best to accommodate. It will be important to attend all 4 class offerings.

Materials:

  • Sewing machine in working order - if the machine is not working well at the start of the class we may need to sit you at one of our machines so we don’t slow progress of the class.

  • Sewing notions -seam ripper, extra needles, small scissors, 1/4” pressor foot, sewing pins, thread, bobbins, small iron and pressing mat (if you have them, we have these in the classroom already as well).

  • Notebook for taking notes.

Purchasing a Machine: We would love to help start you on your sewing journey by setting you up with the perfect sewing machine for you! Our basic starter machine we would recommend is listed at $649 and prices go up from there. We also have a beginners sewing kit that has all of the notions you need to get started quilting. They retail at $99. Please reach out to Leah or Kari with any questions.
